The next technique we cover here is a nice little break from the more complicated ones above, and it involves the sound you get when instead of playing octave pops (such as in disco music), we playtwo notes higher than the root - octave note and play a 9th.

That is to say, instead of slapping, say an G then popping an G an octave higher, we'd slap the G then play a high B, two semitones higher than the octave G. To me, the sound delivered from a popped 9th is rather menacing, especially if allowed to ring for a couple of beats!

In the accompanying video, I play Open E, double dead note A-String 5th Fret, A-String 5th Fret hammer on to 7th Fret, double dead note open E-String, open E-String, double dead note sliding up to E-String 5th Fret, E-String 5th Fret, popped 10th note G-String 6th Fret (staccato), dead note E-String 3rd Fret, E-String 3rd fret, popped 9th note G-String 4th Fret (let ring).

The technique is then repeated several times to get the feel of it. This technique is used extensively by all modern slap players, and is used usually to add an exclamation mark in either a melody or a solo. Use this one often, its a good friend to have!
